  1. Put oil and 3 popcorn kernels in a large heavy lidded pot over medium-high heat.
  2. When the test kernels pop, add the remaining kernels in an even layer and cover. Shake the pot occasionally using oven mitts.
  3. When popping slows to about 2 seconds between pops, remove from heat. Keep covered until popping stops, then open away from your face.
  4. Melt butter, drizzle over popcorn, and toss with salt. Discard any unpopped kernels before eating.
